"I previously used this same ball of twine in a Scratchbord™ painting called "Curious." This time the focus is entirely on the texture of the twine itself, casting a sharp shadow as it hangs from the top of a rustic wood cabinet.
I was aiming for simplicity, trying to make you, the viewer, see the lovely detail that exists within such a simple object. What fun it was to depict the jute - twisted, plied and rolled into ball, with single fibers bending and turning and shooting off randomly in all directions. I worked carefully to be sure the grain texture of the wood was not allowed to visually overpower the twine, keeping it in a darker gray value to set off the lighter fibers. It was a perfect scratching subject!
I employed several different abrasive tools to create the various scratches on this panel, including a pointed etching tool, tattoo needles, a #11 scalpel, and the pointed nib in the Scratchbord™ Knife offered as one of Ampersand's various scratching tools."
